Cannabinoids and psilocybin – alliance

Is the combination of psilocybin with cannabinoids safe and, moreover, effective? We are aware of the potential benefits of these substances when used alone. Their areas of action seem, at first glance, to be completely unrelated, and the interaction – even antagonistic.

So, can these substances be combined, and how will such a combination affect the human body? Is it possible to achieve positive effects or are there potential risks? Let’s start another journey!

Psilocybin mushrooms and cannabis

Since you’ve come across this article, you’re probably familiar with the topic of hemp and psilocybin. However, if you need some systematization of the news, take a look at these articles – Effects of CBD on mental health. What’s worth knowing? and Secrets of Magic Truffles: Everything you need to know about Psilocybe Cubensis.

There you will find a broader discussion of both substances, how they work and how they affect the human body.

Although we know the biochemical mechanisms responsible for the effects of cannabis and mushrooms, their interaction remains unclear.

The mechanism of action of cannabis mainly focuses on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), while psilocybin primarily affects the serotonin system. Nevertheless, the two substances also interact with each other. The ability of cannabis to enhance the psychedelic effects of psilocybin mushrooms is well known, indicating their complex interactions.

Clinical studies conducted so far have not outlined the safety or efficacy of taking cannabis and magic mushrooms simultaneously. However, the topic is increasingly being researched, hence new information and research results are becoming more frequent.

Research on new drug

Researchers at CaaMTech, based in Issaquah, Washington, are working to develop a drug containing psilocybin and cannabinoids. CaaMTech is a company that specializes in researching new pharmaceutical drugs based on next-generation psychedelics that can be used to treat a variety of psychiatric conditions (for the inquisitive, link to their website).

It is now known that both mushrooms and cannabis can be effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. The question, however, is whether the combination of these two substances can provide additional benefits?

Developments in genetic technology for cannabinoids and psilocybin are opening up new possibilities for discovering synergies between the two. CaaMTech is investigating how the two substances interact and what health effects, both physical and mental, can be expected from combining them in a single formulation. A purified psilocybin-cannabinoid product is in early development, opening up new possibilities for future commercial products based on these substances.

Effects of combining cannabis and psilocybin

The effects of both cannabinoids and psilocybin have been fairly well studied. It is known that hemp’s main psychoactive component, THC, activates cannabinoid receptors and produces anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects, while reducing brain inflammation. CBD, another component of hemp, has antioxidant and antipsychotic effects, modulating systems outside the endocannabinoid system. Both substances have shown therapeutic effects on anxiety and pain.

Psychedelics are also being explored as potential mental health treatments. It has been shown that psilocybin can produce long-lasting anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects after a single administration.

Researchers at various prestigious universities, such as Johns Hopkins, Yale and the University of Wisconsin, are conducting experiments on the use of psychedelics to treat brain disorders. Particular attention is being paid to research on the potential therapeutic benefits of psilocybin in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Scientific teams at the University of Miami and other research institutions are revealing the increasing therapeutic potential of combining cannabis with psychedelics, which could lead to revolutionary treatments such as psychedelic-assisted therapy.

A stand-alone experiment

Studies indicate that the combination of cannabinoids with psilocybin can increase psychedelic effects, which can be both beneficial and risky. We recommend caution when combining these substances, consulting a doctor, and following the regulations for their use.

Studies suggest that cannabinoids can increase the psychedelic effects of psilocybin, meaning that this can lead to stronger experiences and altered perceptions of reality. While stronger experiences can provide benefits during psychedelic therapy, they can also increase the risk of negative side effects such as anxiety and paranoia.

Using psilocybin with cannabinoids can also affect the brain and nervous system in a different way than either substance alone. This can lead to changes in mood, thinking and perception, which can bring unforeseen mental health consequences.

For home use, extreme caution should be exercised when combining psilocybin with cannabinoids, as not all interactions between these substances are well studied and unforeseen side effects can occur. We recommend consulting a doctor or specialist before making such a decision, as well as adhering to laws regarding the possession and use of psychoactive substances.
